Caring For Sterling Silver
Here are a few ways to prevent sterling silver from tarnishing or get rid of tarnish.
Avoid air and humidity
Tarnish, or dark silver, is caused by oxygen and humidity. Keeping each item separately, in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware box, is the easiest way to avoid tarnish. Rooms that become humid, the bathroom or kitchen, are not the best places to store your jewelry especially if not in airtight containers.
Wear it often
Your natural skin oil helps prevent tarnish.
Polishing cloths will remove tarnish and make your jewelry shine. Give your silver a quick rub with a polishing cloth before storing it in a container or jewelry box.
Wash your jewelry
Avoid harsh chemicals, especially when cleaning jewelry or men's accessories with gemstones. I recommend Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap. This is gentle and organic, dish soap perfect for cleaning jewelry with gemstones. Just squirt a little bit into a dish, add warm water and scrub your jewelry gently with a toothbrush.
How to Keep the Matte Finish
The matte finish, or slightly scratched silver, will wear off over time. To keep that look, gently scratch with a Scotch-Brite pad and then rub with a polishing cloth. Don't worry if you scratch the silver a little bit too much, eventually it will wear off.
*Avoid scratching the gemstones, that will not wear off.
